Kathryn Matthews Huey ordained, installed at Pilgrim
Cleveland-The congregation of Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ along with the friends, family and colleagues of Kathryn Matthews Huey celebrated her ordination into the Christian ministry on Sunday, December 20.
At the same service, she was also installed as the associate pastor of Pilgrim Church, an "open and affirming" church located in Cleveland's Tremont neighborhood. On October 14, Pilgrim's church council voted unanimously to call Huey as their associate pastor, and she began her yearlong ministry with them on November 1. She leads a Thursday evening worship service that includes music and a celebration of communion.
A native of Canton, Huey is a recent honors graduate from Lexington Theological Seminary in Kentucky where she earned her masters of divinity degree. She was the first openly lesbian woman to be awarded a degree from that prestigious school. She also holds a master of arts degree in theology from John Carroll University and a bachelor of arts degree in history from Walsh University. She has served on the faculty at
Notre Dame College of Ohio where she taught upper-level courses in theology, and designed and taught Liberation, Feminist and Black Theologies courses. She also served on the faculty of John Carroll University teaching introductory religious studies and upper level ethics courses.
Huey's career paths have also led her to work as coordinator of volunteer resources for the American Red Cross Blood Services and as minister of education and outreach at Liberation United Church of Christ, a congregation that was established especially for members and friends of Cleveland's gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. Huey also spent a year as a seminary intern for the United Church Board for Homeland Ministries in their health ministries division.
The Sunday afternoon service of ordination and installation featured a large assembly of ordained ministers from several denominations and congregations, among them, the Rev. David Bahr, the openly gay pastor of Archwood United Church of Christ and Dr. Bill Johnson, UCC minister for HIV/AIDS ministries and les-
bian, gay, bisexual, and minority concerns. Johnson was the first openly gay man ordained by the United Church of Christ, in 1972.
Huey was also joined by her family-her partner Jackie Cassara and their four children, John, Douglas, Kathryn, and
Michael; her parents Robert J. and Kathryn Matthews, and several of her eight brothers and sisters.
A reception was held at the church following the service. Huey

'Lesbian seductress' Denitra to appear at Cleveland club
by Doreen Cudnik Cleveland-Not sure what to do to deal with the post-holiday crash? Plan to be at The Humidor on December 28 at 8:00 p.m. for "Acoustic X-mas," an eclectic ensemble of African American entertainment, featuring "the lesbian seductress" Denitra. The party will be a release celebration for the launching of Denitra's first album Reverend Brown. The album has been described as a "funky mix of house, blues and gospel music."
Event coordinator Sin said the event will also include African drummers and dancers Djembe Fola, poets and singing. There will be plenty of food and diverse music, so "anyone can relax and enjoy the show," she said. "This is a celebration of diversity."
The Humidor is located at 1214 West 6th Street in Cleveland's Warehouse District. Club Columbus shows off
Columbus-There's no time like the holidays to show off new clothes or a new décor. Such was the case recently when Club Columbus held a holiday open house to show off their workout and other facilities to the community for the first time since their re-opening at their new location last
summer.

Following her World AIDS Day performance, Jewel poses with Lifebeat chair Tim Rosta and board member Gary Dell'Abate, right.
Club Columbus manager Jerry Forster noted that he was "very pleased with the turnout" for the event, which was held Sunday, December 6, and catered by the German Village Coffee Shop. Forster says he hopes to show off the state-of-the-art facilities to even more men in the Central Ohio gay community in the coming New Year.
The new club has a fully-equipped gym, tanning facilities, a steam room, sauna, whirlpool, outdoor pool, lockers and private dressing rooms.
Club Columbus memberships are available year-round and would make a unique holiday gift idea for that special someone. The facilities are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year at 795 West Fifth Avenue. For more information call 614291-0049.
Jewel plays at AIDS hospice
New York-Atlantic recording artist Jewel, a fave among lesbian listeners, helped mark World AIDS Day on December 1 with a special appearance at Rivington House, an AIDS hospice in lower Manhattan supported by LifeBeat, the AIDS-fighting arm of the music industry.
Jewel performed a 45-minute solo acoustic set for some of Rivington's male and female residents, in addition to sign-
ing copies of her new album Spirit, and various LifeBeat posters. The new album made its debut at number 3 on both the Billboard 200 and SoundScan "Top Current Albums" charts. It is Jewel's first recording since the 1995's Pieces of You.
Baker's dozen unleashed
New York-Velvel Records recently unleashed a baker's dozen of soon-to-be new holiday classics in A Christmas to Remember. The multi-artist collection offers an assortment of newly-penned originals with distinctive renditions of beloved holiday standards. The result is a diverse and sometimes offbeat collection that runs the gamut from celebratory to sensitive.
Among the well-known Yuletide favorites featured are the Smithereens' explosive version of “Rudolph the RedNosed Reindeer" and the Alarm's passionate rendition of John Lennon's "Happy Xmas (War is Over),” along with Natalie Farr's unique take on the traditional hymn "Ave Maria" and a pensive interpretation of "The Little Drummer Boy" by Pawnshop, featuring Michael McDermott.
The album also features several new original compositions, including Jill Sobule's poignant "The Saddest Day of
the Year" (Sobule is known for last year's hit "I Kissed a Girl"), Michelle Malone's slinkily soulful "Feels Like Christmas," and acclaimed roots troubador Todd Thibaud's stark "Christmas Without You."
Velvel spokesperson Laura Hynes said the album "encompasses in song the broad spectrum of emotions that makes the holiday season such a bountiful buffet of joy and heartache-it's guaranteed to keep your Yule cool."
